maltatoday | SUNDAY • 3 MARCH 2024 5 ALMANAC Nature Notebook 908. Maltese Pyramidal Orchid A walk in rocky habitat at this time of year may bring us face to face with this pink beauty. Like all (but one) of our orchids, the Maltese pyramidal (M. orkida piramidali ta' Malta) is a shorty but it makes up for that with sheer good looks. But it's not just a pretty flower: it's also endemic, i.e. it occurs nowhere else on earth. Islands often abound with endemics. Since islands are isolated, their flora and fauna cannot mix with their mainland counterparts so they often evolve differently and eventually become separate species. Apart from giving us pride and joy, endemics also bind us with a responsi- bility, which is to ensure their survival for the rest of the world. Spe- cies are not the property of any particular country or nation where they occur – they belong to the earth and to everyone. The Maltese pyramidal orchid is also protected by law.
