maltatoday | SUNDAY • 10 MARCH 2024 2 CULTURE This page is supported by Arts Council Malta Malta's participation at the London Design Biennale ARTS Council Malta is currently accepting applications from De- sign Teams to represent Malta at the next London Design Biennale, which will take place from 5-29 June 2025. Under the auspices of the Min- istry for National Heritage, the Arts and Local Government, Arts Council Malta has been entrusted to act as the Commissioner and the Contracting Authority of Mal- ta' participation at the London Design Biennale 2025. The London Design Biennale is an international exhibition and thought leadership programme featuring world leading design innovation and creativity from countries across the globe. The event reveals the potential of design to respond radically to changing social and environmen- tal needs, its contribution to the world economy and its power to drive change and find solutions for the benefit of all. It is attended by high-profile artists from across the world. In 2023, the project Urban Fabric by the design team Open Square Collective, and Commis- sioned by Arts Council Malta, represented Malta at the London Design Biennale. Open Square is a design collective consisting of four members, namely Luke Azz- opardi, Trevor Borg, Matthew Jo- seph Casha and Alessia Deguara. It was a great success. The project re-contextualized the traditional Maltese village core by merging traditional city planning and the Phoenician-Maltese tradition of fabric production and dyeing. It featured extensively in the lo- cal and international press with no less than 51 pieces of international coverage, 283K estimated views, a 92.6m audience and a 17.8K engagement. Amongst the inter- national press that featured the Urban Fabric project, were ICON Newsletter; WALLPAPER* - UK; Creative Boom; Design Boom; DAMN Magazine; the London Financial Times; CNN's Conde' Nast Traveler; Aesthetica Maga- zine and Design Week. The London Design Biennale is held at Somerset House, one of the UK's finest and most beautiful 18th century buildings and is of international historical and archi- tectural importance. The beauti- fully restored galleries at Somer- set House provide participants with the opportunity to display their work in one of London's leading venues. In 2025, Malta's Installation needs to take into consideration the indoor space in which it will be set up in. It will be a site specif- ic, artistic installation which is im- mersive, interactive, and sustaina- ble, as these are key criteria the London Design Biennale would be looking for in all projects. Art- ists/ designers are welcome to experiment with unconventional display and exhibition formats. The call is open to Design Teams with a strong local and international track record. While multi-national Design Teams are encouraged, the lead applicant must be a Maltese c i t - i z e n ; or be in possession of a Malta residence permit; or of a Maltese citizenship certifi- cate; or of a Maltese passport. The Design Team can include artists, architects, designers, researchers, curators, curatorial assistants, and any other related roles as required by the project.
