"Our approach involves bridging the past with the present,
drawing inspiration from historical techniques and materials while
reinterpreting them in a contemporary context." Design architect
Maurizio Ascione espoused this line of thinking in the Architecture
& Design interview. In this frank conversation Ascione emphasises
the diversity in Maltese architecture stemming from centuries of
cultural influences. Yet, he also asks the pertinent question: "We
must ask ourselves how we want to be remembered as a generation
– do we want to be known for overdevelopment, or do we want
to be remembered as the generation that began the process of
healing and refining our architectural soul?"
This edition also has a curious feature on a number of Richard
England's so called aborted architectural foetuses from the 1960s.
The designs applied the use of indigenous architectural topography
without renouncing of what was then the modernist period in
architecture.
