3 maltatoday | SUNDAY • 21 APRIL 2024 NEWS CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 The Building and Construc- tion Authority said initial in- vestigations showed the interior works did not have the full ap- proval of the Planning Author- ity and subsequently no appli- cation had been filed with it for the commencement of works. "There was no permit for the works," the authority said, add- ing it was investigating the case. The two men were carrying out renovation works when neighbours heard a loud noise some time before 10am. A wom- an who lives close to the site of the accident told reporters she rushed outside and saw a large plume of dust and a man exit- ing the building, who was asking for an ambulance since his col- league was trapped inside. The injured worker was taken to Mater Dei Hospital by ambu- lance and the extent of his inju- ries were not yet available. Soon after, the Civil Protection Department was on site to help extract the construction worker who remained trapped under- neath the rubble. His lifeless body was found sometime later. A police spokesperson said both Albanian nationals lived in Żebbuġ. Magistrate Philip Galea Farru- gia is conducting an inquiry and appointed several experts to as- sist him. In a separate statement, the Occupational Health and Safety Authority said the paperwork required by law had not been submitted and so it had not been notified about the works. It is also investigating the incident, together with other authorities. The tragic death is the first since the conclusion of the public inquiry into the death of 20-year-old Jean Paul Sofia, who lost his life in a construction site collapse in December 2022. The public inquiry revealed multiple problems with the way the construction sector is regu- lated and how those regulations are enforced. The government had subse- quently set up an inter-minis- terial committee to implement the inquiry's recommendations.
