maltatoday | SUNDAY • 19 MAY 2024 5 ALMANAC Nature Notebook 919. Mediterranean Killifish WITH well over 300 species of fish occurring around our shores we are not short of marine fish, but lack of rivers and freshwater lakes means 0 species of freshwater fish. What we have are a few coastal lagoons where rain and seawater mix to form brackish pools, which vary in salinity depending on rainfall. The largest of these lagoons are at Għadira, Salina and Is-Simar nature reserves, and at all three sites lives a special fish that prefers still inland waters to choppy seas: the hardy little Mediterranean killifish (M. bużaqq). Our paucity of water bodies means that killifish are very localised in Malta, and for this reason some years ago this largely unknown species was de- clared our national fish. Thanks to its 'elevated' status, the killifish is today a protected species, as are the few sites where it occurs. Friends of the Earth Malta will hold Urban Cycling Skills training! Do you know how to cycle, have a bicycle, but need some support to feel confident to cycle Malta's busy roads? In our Urban Cycling Skills training, experienced commuter cyclists Joe Gatt and Mike Rosner will teach you about the traffic rules for bicycle users in Malta, how to po- sition yourself on the road, how to tackle busy roundabouts, and how to ensure you are visible while cycling in traffic, and more. After a pres- entation with tips, we will go out as a group by bicycle around Floriana and Valletta to practise together and build confidence on the road. The number of participants is very limited, to ensure we are a manageable group. We will cycle as a group, with instructors at the front and rear.
