7 maltatoday | THURSDAY • 6 JUNE 2024 SURVEY MATTHEW FARRUGIA mfarrugia@mediatoday.com.mt Grech climbs two points Trust Barometer by age Trust Barometer by education Trust Barometer by monthly income The survey shows that an absolute majority (52.3%) of 16 to 35 year olds trusts neither of the two political leaders. Distrust in both leaders also remains widespread in the 36 to 50 age bracket where 49% trust neither of the two main leaders THE Broadcasting Authority (BA) has indicated that a mis- leading Imperium Europa elec- tion campaign advert was not in breach of any law. BA CEO Joanna Spiteri told MaltaToday the authority does not look into the content of po- litical messages in parties' ad- verts. The issue concerns Imperi- um Europa's use of a short clip showing Peppi Azzopardi saying 'Norman Lowell was right'. The clip was manipulated to convey the opposite of what Azzopardi actually stands for and has been used in political advertising on TVM. However, Azzopardi clari- fied in a Facebook post that his comments had been taken out of context from an inter- view where he was explaining how some people might mis- takenly support Lowell. He emphasised that the idea of him agreeing with Lowell was entirely false. On Wednesday, Spiteri said that the BA "scrutinises the ma- terial to ensure that there is no breach of Chapter 350 and the related Subsidiary Legislation," although she did not clarify what constitutes a breach of the Broadcasting Act. She said that the parties' po- litical messages are not inves- tigated by the BA, and that it "ensures that the political spots follow the criteria listed in the guidelines of the scheme and ensures that such political spots are broadcast within the adver- tising breaks." During election campaigns the BA allots a number of advertis- ing spots to candidates and po- litical parties. Imperium Europa is fielding two candidates for the European election – Norman Lowell and Terrence Portelli. Authority says misleading Lowell TV spot not a breach of the law A misleading political advert sanctioned by the Broadcasting Authority shows Peppi Azzopardi endorsing Norman Lowell's Imperium Europa… but it was a soundbite taken completely out of context Norman Lowell (left) and Peppi Azzopardi
