maltatoday | SUNDAY • 16 JUNE 2024 5 ALMANAC Nature Notebook 923. Common millipede THEY like to form letters of the alphabet on our walls: p, d, q, b, l, s, o. Are they trying to tell us something? No, they're probably just curled up sleeping off the day after a night scouting for damp nooks and crannies. The millipede (M. ħanex tal-indewwa or millipied) is not the most charismatic of creatures, indeed the sum wisdom most people have of it is "dak li jinten" (the one that stinks!). Well, it's their legit defence against aggressors. Despite their name, millipedes have nowhere near a thousand legs but can still boast a respectful 150 – imagine having to move all those legs in sync just to walk about. Millipedes pose no threat to humans: on the contrary, they do us an excellent service by eating rotting plants, speeding up the break- down of plant material and returning their nutrients to the soil. A GOOD WEEK Good Week/Bad Week A BAD WEEK Rockband REM reformed to play a surprise acoustic rendition of Losing My Religion at the Songwriters Hall of Fame ceremony in New York on Thursday. It marked the first time all four members had performed in public since their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007. The sequel to hit film Inside Out has brought some critics joy, but others felt a different emotion, which has become familiar from watching much of Pixar's recent output - disappointment. Formed in Athens, Georgia, REM went from cult indie band to one of the biggest-selling rock acts of the 1990s, with hits including Everybody Hurts, The One I Love and Man On The Moon. The sequel is "a triumphant creative return for Pixar", according to Variety, while the Independent declared that the "cynicism-free sequel might just save Pixar".
