Architecture & Design | 33 Restoration of the main facade celebrated Alberto La Ferla's original design, and the seamless execution of the design created a spirit that was both overwhelming and uplifting. The vibrant and carefully curated colour palette added a unique charm, with a nod to the importance of art in the overall expression of the space. ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS Environmental considerations were paramount in the restoration and redesign of the townhouse, reflecting a commitment to sustainable practices. The preservation of the original fabric embraced cross ventilation, retaining the passive sustainable qualities of the historic house. By maintaining the original openings, habitable spaces were strategically placed along the façade, promoting natural ventilation as a primary element. The project embraced a "Green Living" philosophy, guiding the transition from the old structure to a more open, occupiable space culminating in a lush rooftop landscape serving as a private retreat. The integration of considerable amounts of built in planters contribute to privacy and the re-introduction of greenery to the Sliema roofscape. The integration of external energy sources, optimal sun exposure, and meticulous temperature control strategies ensured year-round climatic comfort. The inherent cooling/heating system within the original fabric, owing to the thickness of external walls, was respected and optimised. The concrete cladding on the back façade added an extra layer of insulation on an external-facing wall which are traditionally a weak point in the thermal envelope of old buildings. Furthermore, a heat pump was installed to efficiently service both the Underfloor Heating (UFH) system and water heating requirements. The design prioritized sustainability through a thoughtful selection of materials and a responsive use of openings to facilitate natural ventilation. Each architectural element was conceived with environmental consciousness, contributing to an eco-friendly and energy-efficient living environment.
