The Knights of Malta greatly prized the rare plant – known as General's Root – which grows on Fungus Rock, just off the coast of Dwejra. During much of their rule between 1530 and 1798, access to Fungus Rock was tightly controlled. The plant was considered an important medicinal cure for ailments including dysentery and impotence. A total of 1,537,248 passen- gers travelled between Mġarr and Ċirkewwa during the second quarter of 2024, a decrease of 0.3 per cent when compared to the correspond- ing quarter of 2023. The highest number of passen- gers was recorded in May – 524,731 or 34.1 per cent of the total for the quarter. When compared to the corre- sponding quarter of the previous year, the number of vehicles in- creased by 1.9 per cent, totalling 527,931. The number of trips during the second quarter amounted to 8,963, an increase of 0.7 per cent over the same period in 2023. May registered the highest number of trips – 3,011 or 33.6 per cent of total trips for the quarter. Between January and June 2024, passenger and vehicle traffic origi- nating from Ċirkewwa was busiest on Fridays and Saturdays. On the other hand, from the Mġarr terminal, passenger traffic was busi- est on Sundays and Saturdays, while vehicle traffic was highest on Sun- days and Mondays. Sea transport between Mgarr and Valletta During the second quarter of 2024, a total of 2,357 trips were carried out between Mgarr and Valletta, carry- ing a total of 252,960 passengers. When compared to same quarter in 2023, the number of trips increased by 4.6 per cent and the number pas- sengers increased by 38.4 per cent. May registered the highest number of trips – 959 or 40.7 per cent of total trips for the quarter and the highest number of passengers – 103,279 or 40.8 per cent for the quarter.
