4 gozotoday | FRIDAY • 16 AUGUST 2024 NEWS Did you know? The Xwejni saltpans are a compelling landmark with important economic and historical significance. Since the ages of the Phoenicians and Romans, the process of artisan salt production through evaporation has been practiced in Gozo, demonstrating its long-lasting heritage. The act of gathering salt was revived in Gozo under the British rule when the government granted local people privileges that allowed them to labour in and share ownership of the saltpans. THE Gozo Tourism Association is reporting disruption among Gozitan tourism operators due to inconveniences brought about by con- struction activity being carried out next to their respective accommodation establishments. The GTA said that this activity included dem- olition and excavating works which the sum- mer breaktime directive prohibits in certain streets in various touristic areas in Gozo, be- tween mid-June and mid-September. Yet these works were being carried out on sites situated in streets and localities that are not listed in the summer breaktime regula- tions. The GTA said it understands that construc- tion activity has to carry on all year round. "On the other hand, Gozo as a holiday des- tination cannot afford to have its reputation tarnished by such incidents," it said in a state- ment. "Tourists come to Gozo to experience a quite and idyllic holiday and not to have it marred by incessant noises of heavy machinery from early morning till late in the afternoon." It said visitors to Gozo cannot be offered the consequences of machinery noise, unpleas- ant dust and construction waste, presenting a shabby look to the surrounding environment. "It is high time that the summer break time Subsidiary Legislation is revisited and revised especially where Gozo is concerned," the GTA said. "The present reality is that the whole of Gozo has become a touristic area, and not only the handful of streets in certain localities that are highlighted in the summer breaktime direc- tive." It called on the competent authorities to amend the summer breaktime directive to en- sure that no excavation and demolition works are carried out within a 50-metre radius of an MTA licensed premises. This directive should cover all Gozo and not just a few selected and limited number of streets. Tourism association wants 'limited' construction summer breaktime directive to include 50m buffer zone throughout Gozo CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 Identified as Mr L, the winner is a 64-year-old UK national that has been residing in Gozo for a number of years.
