DIARY OF A VOLUNTEER
maltatoday | SUNDAY • 1 SEPTEMBER 2024
ON THE
FRONT
LINE OF
WAR
Maltese mother-of-two
Christina Lejman works with
local humanitarian voluntary
organisation MOAS. In June, their
HQ team travelled to Ukraine to
visit their projects on the front
line of the war, where 150 medics
and drivers undertake critical care
evacuations, saving lives on a daily
basis. This is part five of a six-part
series recounting her experiences.
Part 5:
The drums
of war
Sunday 16 June, 2024
AT 7am there is a knock
on the door. By now, Vital-
ii's silhouette has become
familiar. He indicates that
there is an evacuation start-
ing - a patient needs to be
collected from a triage point
about 25km from the front
line and our team is getting
ready to pick them up.
My communications col-
league Fran is behind me,
shoes on and bag in hand
before Vitalii has finished
explaining. We are so keen
not to get in the way. In si-
lence, she slips on her Kev-
lar, and I wave her off as
they depart before return-
ing to my bunk.
It's mid-morning now and
the air is fresh. I'm keen
to take a look around the
town, to get a better under-
standing of how civilian life
continues, layered between
the humanitarian services
and the military presence.
