maltatoday | SUNDAY • 1 SEPTEMBER 2024 5 ALMANAC Nature Notebook 934. Eurasian Golden Oriole IF you're out walking in the countryside at this time of year and this bright yellow, almost pigeon-sized bird streaks across your eyeline, you have just seen a golden oriole! Golden orioles (M. tajra safra) are one of the more colourful birds that grace our valleys and green spots for a few days in spring and autumn as they travel north or south across the Med. The name couldn't fit the bird better: if the male's bold yellow plumage explains 'golden', you only need hear the bird's fluty song to understand the 'oriole' bit, though admittedly they don't sing much in autumn. Thanks to their gaudy colour, many golden orioles end up dead and stuffed in hunters' collections, de- spite being a protected species. Only when hunting becomes histo- ry (or strictly enforced) will we truly enjoy golden orioles and other birds without worrying about their safety.
