8 | Architecture & Design I n today's world, sustainability is essential for preserving resources and reducing overall environmental output. For Malta, a small island nation, embracing sustainable practices is especially important, as even minor changes can have a significant impact on its ecological footprint. This is where The Quad Central stands out as a pioneer of green innovation as the only building in Malta to achieve LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Platinum certification, a prestigious recognition by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). LEED provides a framework for healthy, efficient, and cost-saving green buildings. It evaluates them on various sustainability metrics, including energy and water efficiency, indoor environmental quality, materials selection, and sustainable site development. Achieving LEED certification, especially at the Platinum level, represents the highest standard of sustainability and environmental responsibility. Quad Central's mission was clear: to create a sustainable, future-proof complex that stands the test of time. By adhering to this vision, the project has seen encouraging results that inspire further progress. During the construction phase, 21% of building materials used recycled content, furthermore, achieved a 75% landfill diversion rate. Today, the complex operates with a 65% reduction in potable water use, thanks to innovative water-conserving solutions like on-site wastewater treatment and reuse systems. It also saves 41% on energy consumption through high efficiency measures. Sandro Attard, General Manager noted: "Our journey at Quad Central shows that 'less is more,' where smart use The Power of SuSTainable DeSign in archiTecTure Q u a d C e n t r a l i n M a l t a s e t s a n e w b e n c h m a r k f o r s u s t a i n a b i l i t y , e a r n i n g L E E D P l a t i n u m c e r t i f i c a t i o n .
