18 | Architecture & Design Illuminating History: The Art and Ambience Illuminating History: The Art and Ambience of Lighting at Pjazza Nineteen 02 of Lighting at Pjazza Nineteen 02 T he opening of Pjazza 1902 marks the revival of a once-thriving social hub in the heart of Pembroke, once a forgotten piece of British military architecture. Offering a range of family-friendly entertainment, unqiue dining experiences, and a state-of-the-art fitness centre, the restored landmark offers a masterclass in architectural preservation and adaptive reuse. Built in the early 19th century in honour of King Edward the VII, the venue became home to the iconic Raffles discotheque in the 1980s before much of the original structure perished to a devastating fire a few years after the club closed its doors in the early 1990s. After its restoration, this iconic venue has been reborn as a space where history and contemporary design come together effortlessly. Architecturally, the building was built in a typical British colonial military way, using local limestone and featuring symmetrical layouts with simple, functional designs. Now, the building also blends modern elements—such as clean lines, open spaces, and public art—with the preserved historical structures. As a result of its revival, the establishment now serves as a dynamic, multi-functional space, anchored by a variety of partners. The incorporation of modern lighting plays a key role in creating an inviting ambiance, particularly at night, highlighting architectural features and enhancing the overall atmosphere. At the heart of the lighting design is Slamp, the renowned Italian brand known for its innovative approach and artistic craftsmanship. Since its founding in 1994, Slamp has led the way in cutting-edge lighting design, offering unique pieces that beautifully combine form, function, and technology. For the Nineteen 02 restaurant, two of Slamp's standout collections—Nuvem and Clizia—were chosen to enhance the space and highlight its architectural charm. The Nuvem ceiling fixture is a true showpiece, with its modular, cloud-like design that seems to float above the room, casting a soft, diffused glow. Made from lightweight, flexible materials, Nuvem does more than light the space—it transforms it, creating a warm, almost dreamlike atmosphere. One of the benefits that came with picking the Nuvem fixture was that it didn't interfere with the structural integrity of the building; instead, it enhanced the overall look of the rooms. Complementing Nuvem, the Clizia applique and suspension lights continue the nature-inspired theme. These fixtures, crafted from Slamp's unique Lentiflex and Opalflex materials, resemble delicate bouquets of petals, interacting with light to create soft, changing effects. The warm, golden tones of these fittings add depth and elegance to the restaurant, inviting guests to experience the space in a whole new way. Clizia's floral design, both soft and refined, fits seamlessly into both modern and traditional settings, offering flexibility and style. This thoughtful collaboration has resulted in a lighting design that not only honours the architectural history of Pjazza Nineteen 02 but also adds a modern twist. By blending Slamp's visionary craftsmanship with carefully chosen lighting solutions, Pjazza Nineteen 02 creates an environment where history and innovation meet, offering a space that feels both timeless and contemporary.
