maltatoday | SUNDAY • 3 NOVEMBER 2024 5 ALMANAC Nature Notebook 943. Eurasian golden plover THE European golden plover (M. pluviera) is a plump medium-sized bird that loves grasslands and meadows. It's a regular passage bird in Malta, though nowhere as common as it was in the past. Some try to spend the winter here, in open places like the airport area, but they invariably fail. Because, you see, golden plovers are a prime target for our army of hunters. The incessant piping calls you hear if you go for a stroll in the countryside are often golden plover calls but of course they won't be actual birds, but rather the electronic callers hunters use (illegally, by the way) to lure the real birds to a violent, pointless end. However much hunters try to justify killing the bird for food, their real joy is the adrenalin rush they get from killing it. A GOOD WEEK Good Week/Bad Week A BAD WEEK Brat is a word you've probably seen just about everywhere over the last couple of months and now it's officially Collins Dictionary word of the year. Defined as someone with a "confident, independent and hedonistic attitude" it has been inspired by Charli XCX. Ofcom has fined GB News £100,000 for breaking impartiality rules with a programme featuring the former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. He appeared on the TV channel on 12 February 2024 as part of a one-hour current affairs special that included a Q&A session. Even the team for US presidential candidate Kamala Harris decided to give her social media a brat rebrand, to attract younger voters at the start of her campaign this summer. The media watchdog said Mr Sunak was given an "uncontested platform to promote the policies and performance of his government in a period preceding the UK General Election".
