NOVEMBER 16 @ 11:00 - 13:00 The Pawlu Mizzi Memorial Lecture IL-Ħaġar Gozo Museum – Victoria Eclecticism and the Baroque Revival in the Decorative Arts in Malta – public lecture by Mark Sagona. The lecture focuses on one of the most remarkably rich episodes in the extraordinary and profuse story of the decorative arts in Malta: the years straddling the late nineteenth and early twentieth centu- ries and discusses the prevalance of Ec- lecticism and Baroque Revival currents during the height of the British coloni- al domination. It celebrates the island's most gifted native designers who reflected the European predilection for such design solutions, but the ouvre of Gatt is surely the most emblematic of this fascinating era, and it brilliantly captures the design mood of the epoch, especially in the context of the ecclesi- astical decorative arts. Il-Qala is the easternmost village in Gozo and boasts fabulous views over the sea to Comino and Malta as well as a long history of settlement since earliest times – through the present settlement dates back to the second half of the seventeenth century. Il-Qala means port and probably refers to the nearby bay and landing stage of Hondoq ir-Rummien, now a popular swimming place. Breathtaking views can be enjoyed from the il-Qala Belvedere and from the small courtyard in front of the little church known as Il-Madonna tal-Blat (Saint Mary of the Rocks). This church faces Comino and legend has it that it was built so that the people of this neighboring island could follow Holy Mass from across the sea when the weather was too rough for a priest to cross to them.
