A woman who reported her part- ner to the police for domestic violence later told the court that she regretted filing the report, leading to the termination of le- gal proceedings. A domestic violence case came to an abrupt end after the victim, under oath, confirmed her deci- sion to withdraw the proceedings against her partner, stating that she had regretted filing the initial report. Inspector Jason Cachia Butler recalled that on 24 November 2024, a woman had filed a report to the Domestic Violence Unit. On that day, which also hap- pened to be the woman's birth- day, she and her partner had a verbal disagreement which arose after he refused to attend a fami- ly dinner due to a prior incident. The woman had gone to the po- lice station to file a police report. Inspector Cachia Butler recalled how the woman filed the report and had presented a medical re- port dated two months prior, indicating an incident which left the woman with light wounds. A risk assessment was conducted, and it was discovered that the woman was in danger consider- ing that the man owned a gun. The man pleaded not guilty, with his defence counsel not con- testing the validity of his arrest. Before procedures could con- tinue, the victim approached the prosecuting inspector, and asked if the procedures can be terminat- ed. The victim was thus ordered by the Court to take the stand. She said: "I filed the report, and I regret it". The Magistrate asked her to confirm her statements, to which the woman said, "I am cer- tain about it, by my oath" ("ċerta, bil-ġurament tiegħi"). The court, presided by Magis- trate Leonard Caruana, decided to end the procedures. Inspector Colin Sheldon led the prosecution. Lawyer Raphael Fenech Adami was the defence counsel. However, the Department for Industrial and Employment Relations declined the request, citing that the deadline for filing such claims had passed. In response, the GWU launched a series of industrial actions to exert pressure. These include directives for its mem- bers to refrain from covering for employees on vacation or sick leave and prohibiting Assistant Registrars from assigning re- placements. GWU has also directed its members to prevent Assistant Registrars from directly cov- ering for absent Deputy Regis- trars. GWU members are also disallowed from recording court sittings. Rival union UĦM has instruct- ed its members to follow similar action plans. The Court Services Agency called for constructive dialogue among all parties to resolve the dispute promptly and fairly.
