TILL NOVEMBER 30 @ 8:30AM ONWARDS The Gaze of Gozo Xewkija Windmill, Gozo The Gaze of Gozo is a collection of paintings by Audrey Mercieca that explore the island's beauty through various perspectives. Mercieca's works range from sunsets and seascapes to historical sites, capturing the island's rural and urban charm. Her paintings invite viewers into a Lacanian inter- play of the Imaginary and the Real, showcasing the island's natural beauty and historical significance. Through her use of different artistic styles, Mercieca offers a multifaceted view of Gozo, blending the external landscapes with internal experiences. NOVEMBER 30 @ 11AM - 1PM The Evolution and Cult of the Neapolitan Crib Il-Ħaġar Gozo Musuem The history of Naples is dotted with priests enchanted by the mystery of Christmas, including saints like Cate- jan of Thiene, Joseph Calasanzio, and Alphonse Maria De' Liguori. In this talk, which builds on one the speaker have at Il-Ħaġar last year, Mgr Dr Vel- la will explore the evolution and cult of the Neopolitan crib, with particular reference to the three main elements – light, form, and colour – which, fused together, reveal the love of God towards humanity, to the point of tak- ing human form and being born poor among the poor, to redeem all in the same manner: the rich, the powerful, the unpriviledged, the marginalised, the afflict, the suffering, the downtrod- den. This form of craftsmanship, of the highest artistic value, has always at- tracted a wide variety of personalities: from princes to sovreigns, bankers to merchants, prelates to humble priests, and devotees to unbelievers. Above all, it has created a dazzling, fable-like atmosphere that enchants both adults and children, allowing them to experi- ence a moment of paradise. Picturesque Xaghra has a particularly rich historical heritage and therefore plenty to offer the visitor. Built on a lengthy stretch of high ground northeast of the capital, ix-Xaghra is encircled by the beautiful bays of Ramla (the island's best beach), Ghajn Barrani and Marsalforn, while the valleys of Ramla, Ta' l-Ghejjun and Marsalforn caress this lovely village. Ix-Xaghra is surrounded by fertile valleys and some of the best agricultural land in Gozo. It is perhaps not surprising then that the area has been settled since the earliest times. Ix-Xaghra is home to the extraordinary UNESCO World Heritage Ggantija temple complex, consisting of two Neolithic stone temples built from as early as 3600BC making them amongst the oldest freestanding stone buildings in the world.
