maltatoday | SUNDAY • 15 DECEMBER 2024 2 CULTURE Heritage Malta and The Malta National Aquarium bringing the depths to the surface HERITAGE Malta has launched a new display at the Malta Na- tional Aquarium, offering an immersive journey into local underwater sites – ranging from ancient Phoenician shipwrecks to World War II wrecks and war graves. At this new exhibition, located on the upper floor of the Mal- ta National Aquarium, visitors can virtually dive the depths of the Mediterranean using cut- ting-edge technology. Interac- tive tools, including holograms, allow guests to examine intricate details of submerged artefacts and wrecks, while projections and cinematic presentations provide captivating narratives about these hidden treasures. Artefacts from the national col- lection are also on display, cre- ating a tangible connection to these underwater marvels. Designed by Heritage Malta's Underwater Cultural Heritage Unit, the displays combine ad- vanced digital tools prepared by the agency's Technology and Experience Development Unit, with engaging storytelling, mak- ing the inaccessible accessible. This multi-sensory experience aims to inspire visitors of all ag- es, fostering a deeper apprecia- tion for Malta's maritime histo- ry and highlighting the critical importance of preserving these underwater treasures for future generations. Noel Zammit, Heritage Malta's CEO, stated that, "This display is a perfect example of how we can merge heritage with innovation to create meaningful connec- tions with our past. It allows vis- itors to engage with Malta's un- derwater treasures in ways never possible before, broadening the reach and impact of our cultural heritage." Professor Timmy Gambin, Head of the Underwater Cul- tural Heritage Unit, commented that, "The installation of this dis- play at Malta's National Aquar- ium manifests Heritage Malta's commitment to take Malta's underwater sites to the people. It is also a prime example of how public-private partnerships can deliver top quality products that enhance educational experienc- es for locals and tourists alike." Mark Pace, Director of Sales and Marketing at the Malta Na- tional Aquarium, remarked that: "The Malta National Aquarium and Heritage Malta have en- joyed a long and successful part- nership, including this recent project showcasing Malta's un- derwater heritage and the work of Professor Timmy Gambin's team. We are optimistic about expanding this initiative, offer- ing the public a fresh perspective on Malta's history."
