6 gozotoday | FRIDAY • 3 JANUARY 2025 OPINION AS the spokesperson for the Nationalist Party in Gozo, I firmly believe that our par- ty has always been, and continues to be, the natural choice for Gozitans. We have a con- sistent track record of planning and vision, grounded in an unwavering commitment to addressing the unique challenges of our island while unlocking its immense poten- tial. Our priorities for 2025 reflect this ded- ication. We are here to ensure a brighter, more sustainable future for Gozo, rooted in growth, opportunity, and the preservation of our identity. 1. Infrastructure Development Gozo's infrastructure is the foundation of our progress. I am committed to advocating for better road networks, safer routes, and proper maintenance across the island. Connectivity is crucial, and we must mod- ernise and expand the Gozo Channel ferry service, including investing in eco-friendly vessels that are reliable and sustainable. We cannot delay essential projects any longer. I will push relentlessly for the completion of the Gozo Museum, the Gozo Court, and the Gozo Aquatic Pool—facilities that our community has been promised and rightly deserves. 2. Healthcare and Social Services Healthcare in Gozo must be transformed. A fully functional, modern hospital is no longer a dream; it is a necessity. I will con- tinue to demand specialized healthcare services that reduce our reliance on Mal- ta's facilities, ensuring that Gozitans can receive the care they need locally. Mental health and elderly care services must also be improved. These are funda- mental to the well-being of our communi- ty, and I will fight to ensure they are acces- sible and properly resourced. 3. Economic Development Gozo's economy needs diversification, and I am determined to lead this charge. Tourism is important, but we must go fur- ther. We will focus on creating opportu- nities in technology, remote workspaces, and creative industries, positioning Gozo as a hub for innovation and growth. Our small businesses and artisans are the backbone of our economy. We will cham- pion their success by supporting initiatives that empower them and advocating for policies that attract sustainable investment while preserving our cultural and natural heritage. 4. Education and Youth Opportunities Our youth deserve better opportunities. I will push for an expansion of MCAST and University of Malta satellite campuses in Gozo, ensuring more courses and training options are available locally. We must create programs that retain young talent, providing meaningful jobs and vibrant social spaces. We are also committed to introducing sports and rec- reational initiatives that engage our youth and foster a sense of belonging. 5. Environmental Sustainability Gozo has the potential to lead the nation in environmental sustainability, and I am determined to make this a reality. My vi- sion includes campaigning for renewable energy projects, such as offshore wind and solar farms, to achieve a net-zero carbon island by 2040. Protecting Gozo's natural heritage is non-negotiable. Stricter planning regula- tions and the preservation of open spaces will remain priorities. I also believe Gozo can serve as a national test-bed for inno- vative solutions in waste management and water scarcity, turning our challenges into opportunities for progress. 6. Tourism and Culture Tourism is a cornerstone of our econo- my, but it must evolve. I will work to pro- mote high-quality, eco-conscious tourism that respects our island's unique identity. Encouraging year-round tourism through events, festivals, and cultural activities is essential. I will also push for funding to restore and promote our his- toric sites, preserving our heritage for gen- erations to come. 7. Community and Social Inclusion Every Gozitan deserves to feel included and supported. I am committed to advocating for better support systems for persons with disa- bilities, addressing the multi-layered insular- ity they face socially and physically. Talking to NGOs in the sector, we clearly must alleviate the difficulties in accessing disability services and ensure equal oppor- tunities for all. Strengthening community engagement through support for village or- ganizations and local initiatives is also a key priority for me. 8. Governance and Representation Gozo needs greater autonomy. I will al- ways advocate in giving Gozitans the ability to make decisions for their future. It is equally important that Gozo receives its fair share of national funding and EU grants. I will champion transparency and fight against favoritism or corruption, en- suring that our resources are used for the benefit of all Gozitans. I stand by the Nationalist Party's consist- ent planning and bold vision for our is- land. Our priorities for 2025 demonstrate our unwavering commitment to address- ing Gozo's challenges while enhancing its strengths. With the Nationalist Party, Gozo can achieve sustainable growth, foster inclusiv- ity, and preserve its unique identity as the jewel of the Mediterranean.
