Architecture & Design | 31 In this way through this play with the architectural fabric, the concept gives another dimension to the space as it works in 3D rather than in just 2D. It creates a dynamic focal point for every room overlooking the courtyard guiding the eyes through the space whilst letting in indirect light here and there all over the living spaces. The carved patterns break the light further resulting in ever-changing multiple shadows throughout the day, animating the facades. The gap, play of volumes and geometric shapes gave the architects the opportunity to extend another two units without over imposing over the old property dwarfing it to minimal value. On the contrary, the contemporary mediterranean volumes compliment and respect the existing architecture whilst presenting the end user with romantic, yet distinct story between the old and the new. The design of the interiors further emphasizes the project's contemporary Mediterranean aesthetic blending the spirit of tradition with modernity featuring uneven whitewashed walls, terrazzo tiles, and exposed timber beams. This contrasts the dark aubergine colour vaulted entrance that opens up onto the courtyard. The above concept was even translated into the interiors by creating focal points flowing from dark to light and framing parts of the contemporary volumes. Even though the finishes found at the house before renovation were more of a recent era, the tiles in the front room were kept, polished and extended with a new complementing tile that continues on the wall. All finishes give an earthy feeling aiming to provide the residents with a memorable experience combining a contemporary take on Mediterranean living. Space making was the ultimate goal of this renovation. It was meant to provide the end user with a harmoniously pleasant yet functional space through unity, rhythm, scale, contrast and proportion; A SENSE OF BELONGING!
