9 maltatoday | WEDNESDAY • 15 JANUARY 2025 CULTURE HERITAGE Malta launched a new ex- hibition dedicated to Edward Pirotta (1939–1968), one of Malta's most gift- ed modern sculptors. For the first time in nearly 60 years, Pirotta's remarkable body of work has been reunited and is now on display at MUŻA, Valletta's flagship nation- al-community art museum. A lecture celebrating the artist's life and legacy officially launched the ex- hibition. Curated by Prof. Joseph Paul Cassar, the exhibition offers a rare glimpse into Pirotta's short but im- pactful career, showcasing his ability to capture the human form with a pro- found sense of beauty and emotion. The exhibition brings several of his unique artworks under one roof, to- gether with historic documents, med- als, his personal toolbox and photo- graphs documenting the artist and his work. Prof. Cassar stated "This is a historic exhibition on a Maltese artist who was almost forgotten before this initiative by Heritage Malta. Edward Pirotta un- fortunately died tragically at the very young age of 29, but his works live on, and we can now appreciate them in this exhibition." Mario Cutajar, Chairman of Herit- age Malta, expressed his enthusiasm for this significant cultural event: "MUŻA needs to be the showcase of Malta's art and the Maltese artist. In the following days, part of MUŻA will be closed so that the permanent exhi- bition begins to mature this concept which will not allow Maltese artists such as Edward Pirotta to be forgot- ten. This exhibition is restoring life to Pirotta's works as much as it is giving life to the reason why there should be MUŻA in and for the community." A publication authored by Prof. Cassar accompanies this exhibition, providing an in-depth exploration of Pirotta's life and work. It is based on research carried out over the last 25 years, including iden- tifying as many works by the artist as possible – found mostly in Malta, London, Italy, Australia, U.S.A. Can- ada and Ecuador. Copies of the book are available for purchase both at MUŻA and online via the Heritage Malta store on: www.heritagemalta. mt/store The exhibition runs until the end of March 2025. Admission is included with the standard museum ticket. For more information about the ex- hibition, visit https://heritagemalta. mt/whats-on/edward-pirotta-sculp- tor-1939-1968/.
