4 gozotoday | FRIDAY • 17 JANUARY 2025 NEWS THE Special Olympics Malta pro- gramme was officially launched in Gozo, bringing structured and inclusive sports opportunities for individuals with intellectual dis- abilities to the island. The initi- ative aims to create a supportive environment where participants can develop their talents, build confidence, and achieve their full potential. The programme's launch co- incides with the 25th anniver- sary of Special Olympics Malta, a milestone celebrated with the expansion of its services to Gozo. Lydia Abela, President of Special Olympics Malta, described this development as a dream turned into reality. "This is a significant step in the organisation's history, driven by the passion of a nation that be- lieves everyone has something to offer. Expanding these pro- grammes and services to Gozo has long been a goal for us," she said. Minister for Gozo and Planning Clint Camilleri praised the initia- tive as a reflection of the govern- ment's commitment to diversity and inclusion on the island. "When we talk about sports, we're addressing much more than physical activity. We're talk- ing about creating opportunities, building confidence, achieving personal goals, and fostering true inclusion within society. As a gov- ernment, we are committed to improving the quality of life for everyone, including individuals with disabilities," he said. Camilleri also called on the wid- er community to embrace the programme, fostering an envi- ronment where every individual feels valued and included. "This is a journey of hope and opportuni- ty for those who need it most," he added. Sean Zammit, Head of the Gozo College Network, and Christabel D'Amato, Sports Director at Spe- cial Olympics Malta, highlighted the programme's objectives and the impact it aims to have on the Gozitan community. The launch event brought to- gether teachers, coaches, learning support educators (LSEs), and parents, underscoring the collec- tive effort to create a more inclu- sive society. Through this programme, Gozo takes a significant step in promot- ing inclusion and celebrating the abilities of every individual, rein- forcing the transformative power of sport.
