7 gozotoday | FRIDAY • 17 JANUARY 2025 NEWS Joe Muscat is CEO of the Gozo Tourism Association Joe Muscat AS Gozitans, we proudly identify as Maltese nationals born and raised on the beautiful island of Gozo. Our home, while small and geographically on the periphery, has consistently demon- strated its resilience and drive to thrive. Gozo is more than just an extension of Malta; it is undeniably an island region with its own unique identity, distinctive characteristics, and challenges that set it apart. Despite its size, Gozo has long con- tributed to the nation's growth, and we aspire for this to continue. As am- bitious Islanders, we envision a future where Gozo not only benefits from Malta's development but does so in a way that preserves its identity. Growth must align with Gozo's unique char- acter, ensuring sustainability while al- lowing the island to excel in areas that reflect its strengths, such as niche mar- kets and specialized sectors. The Gozitan economy has traditional- ly depended on tourism, real estate, and construction. While these industries remain vital, relying solely on them makes the island vulnerable to external pressures. Diversifying the economy is not just desirable—it is essential. With strategic investments, Gozo can attract businesses that create meaningful and diverse employment opportunities, al- lowing the island to flourish. Equally important is investing in our young people. Gozitan youth must have access to high-quality education and professional opportunities, both on the Maltese mainland and abroad. For those who choose to stay, Gozo must offer viable and rewarding career paths, ensuring they can thrive in their homeland without compromising on prospects. These aspirations are not new. For years, Gozitans have worked tirelessly toward the island's social and econom- ic progress. This shared determination has been the driving force behind the establishment of various regional bod- ies and institutions. From the Gozo Civic Council and the Gozo Admin- istrative Secretary to the Ministry for Gozo and the Gozo Regional Develop- ment Authority, these organizations have laid the groundwork for Gozo's advancement. Complementing these are influential bodies such as the Gozo Tourism Association, the Gozo Busi- ness Chamber, and the Gozo Regional Committee within MCESD, each con- tributing significantly to the island's journey. While these institutions have pro- pelled progress, the time has come to take the next step. The Gozo Tourism Association firmly believes that now is the moment for Gozo to claim its right- ful autonomy in regional governance. Autonomy would allow Gozitans to take ownership of their island's future. It would empower us to make decisions tailored to our unique needs and aspi- rations, enabling us to define and pur- sue a collective vision for Gozo. True regional autonomy goes beyond cre- ating new institutions; it requires in- tegrating existing structures, refining practices, and enhancing regional ca- pabilities. Governance, in this sense, is not just about government—it's about how we, as a community, collaborate, decide, and act. This vision calls for all stakeholders to work together. Though their objectives may differ, their collective efforts must focus on policies that address Gozo's needs. Cooperation and dialogue will be essential to finding common ground, resolving challenges, and seizing op- portunities that will shape the island's future. It is crucial to emphasize that regional autonomy does not mean dismantling the Ministry for Gozo. On the contrary, autonomy would strengthen the minis- try's role, transforming it into a dynam- ic entity responsible for implementing the policies and visions created by the Gozitan community. This evolution toward regional gov- ernance represents a natural step in decentralization. It aligns with the principles of sustainable development, fostering self-reliance while strength- ening Gozo's ability to navigate its own path. Autonomy would provide Gozo with the tools to shape its future, en- suring that its voice is heard and its identity preserved. Achieving this vision will not happen by chance. It demands collective ac- tion and a shared commitment from all Gozitans, regardless of political differ- ences. History teaches us that progress comes when we stand together, united by a common goal. The responsibility for realizing autonomy in governance lies solely with us, the people of Gozo. No one else will do it for us—it is up to us to rise, take ownership, and drive our island forward. The time is ripe. Let us seize this mo- ment to empower Gozo with the gov- ernance it deserves, ensuring a bright- er, more prosperous future for all who call this island home. The moment of opportunity – the time is ripe For years, Gozitans have worked tirelessly toward the island's social and economic progress. This shared determination has been the driving force behind the establishment of various regional bodies and institutions.
