9 maltatoday | WEDNESDAY • 12 FEBRUARY 2025 ARTS Significant changes to MUZA's permanent exhibitions to enrich the experience of art THE art galleries at MUŻA - The National Community Art Muse- um – are undergoing a transfor- mation as significant changes are introduced to its permanent exhi- bitions. In recent weeks, efforts have been concentrated on the first- floor gallery, with the primary goal of offering visitors a broad- er and more immersive experi- ence of art in Malta. Heritage Malta remains com- mitted to ensuring that the mu- seum's permanent exhibition continues to evolve, preserving and showcasing the contribu- tions of Maltese artists. These changes will also strengthen MUŻA's role as an educational hub, telling the sto- ry of Malta's artistic heritage and the influences that have shaped it over time. The restructuring follows a chronological approach, tracing art from prehistoric times to the 21st century. Chairperson of Heritage Malta and Director of MUŻA, Mario Cutajar, explained: "MUŻA is undergoing a transition to cre- ate a richer experience, placing the visitor at the heart of our mission. The first phase of this project focused on art from the Prehistoric period to the Ba- roque era. Our next step will highlight Maltese artists as we move towards contemporary art. Every visit to MUŻA will be an evolving experience, with newly designed spaces guiding visitors through Malta's artistic history. We strongly believe that art is a powerful language, and through this museum, we can communi- cate it more effectively." Heritage Malta's Chief Ex- ecutive Officer, Noel Zammit, reaffirmed the agency's com- mitment to embracing modern global trends in museology: "In practice, this means shifting the focus of museums and heritage sites from simply showcasing collections to prioritising visi- tor engagement and experience. Our museums and sites are be- ing transformed through vari- ous innovations, particularly in interpretation methods, making them less academic and more accessible. Technology is also playing a key role, enhancing the visitor experience by making it increasingly interactive and immersive." THE second in Pjazza Teatru Rjal's Iljieli fit-Teatru '25 – Chamberfest – series is dedicated to the saxophone. Ever since its invention in the mid-19th century, the saxophone has proved its versatility in bands, jazz, and classical music alike. In the field of chamber music, the saxophone-piano com- bination has been a favourite of many a composer as will be amply examplified by saxophonist Philip Attard, who will be accompanied on the piano by Christine Zerafa. The programme showcases a diverse range of styles and cultural influences while highlighting the virtuosity and versatility of both instruments. Jules Demersseman's Fan- tasie Sur un Thème Original opens with lively flair, fol- lowed by Camille Saint-Saëns' Sonata for Oboe and Piano in an arrangement for saxophone, offering rich contrasts between lyrical and lively movements. Charles Camilleri's Three Folk Songs explores Mediter- ranean rhythms, while Manuel de Falla's Siete Canciones Populares Españolas brings Spanish folk melodies to life through evocative piano and instrumental textures. Robert Muczynski's Sonata Op. 29 offers modern in- tensity, concluding with Pedro Iturralde's lively Pequeña Czarda, a playful Hungarian-inspired piece. Concert starts at 7.30pm. Entrance for the concert will be from Casa Cassar, Triq il-Vittorja, Valletta.
