6 gozotoday | FRIDAY • 14 FEBRUARY 2025 CULTURE LOCATED in the core of Gozo's city, amid the oldest quarters known as San Ġorġ tal-Ħaġar, rises St George's Basilica, a church with roots dating back to the 5th century AD. St George has been vener- ated as Gozo's patron saint for centuries. Originally built on the site of a pagan temple, the church has been rebuilt several times, and the current structure dates back to 1678. The church over- looks one of Gozo's most pic- turesque squares, surrounded by narrow streets, quaint al- leyways, and traditional town- houses. The piazza, bustling with ac- tivity throughout the day and quieter in the early hours, is a perfect spot to enjoy the is- land's typical ambience. Once you're here, be sure to step in- side the majestic St George's Basilica, often referred to as Gozo's Golden Basilica, and discover its rich collection of art, ornate decor, and priceless artifacts. A Gateway to Reflection: Facade and Main Door Pause and take a moment at the bronze door of the basil- ica, a stunning feature of its Neo-Classical facade. This ornate portal, which de- picts imagery of Christ, com- memorates the Great Jubilee of 2000. Notice the two marble clocks set into the facade. Unlike tra- ditional clocks, these clocks do not measure hours or minutes; instead, they encourage reflec- tion on the fleeting nature of time. A Golden Sanctuary: Main Aisle, Side Chapels, and Transept Upon entering, you are envel- oped in a golden space adorned with fine art, paintings, mosaics, and intricate decor. The vaulted ceiling is a stunning depiction of angels and saints, framed by pasta and stucco decorations. The main paintings here doc- ument the life of St George, the martyr. The side chapels are equally impressive, showcasing gilded decorations and mosaics that depict saints and biblical scenes. The transept features richly carved altars and houses impor- tant artworks, including the tit- ular statue of St. George slaying the dragon, sculpted from a tree trunk. Of Majesty and Light: Main Altar, Tribune, and Dome The eye is naturally drawn to the main altar, crafted from white Carrara marble. Above it, a bronze canopy recalls the bal- dachin of St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican, creating a striking contrast with the white marble. The interplay of golden hues and the black canopy adds to the altar's grandeur. As your gaze travels upward, it rests on the dome, which features a series of paintings in harmony with the stained- glass windows. The light pass- ing through these colored win- dows adds a mystical quality to the space. Behind the altar, the semicircular apse showcas- es a magnificent painting of St. George's entry into heaven fol- lowing his martyrdom. A true crown jewel of the basil- ica is the painting The Triumph of St George by the renowned artist Mattia Preti, which is one of its most significant treasures. A True Crown Jewel: Neo- Byzantine Chapel An unexpected gem within the basilica is the recently inaugu- rated Neo-Byzantine Adoration Chapel. This chapel empha- sizes Eastern Christian tradi- tions, especially the veneration of St. George, and is adorned with Byzantine-style mosaics. It creates a sacred space that transports the soul, offering a spiritual experience like no oth- er. For Art Lovers and Devotees St. George's Basilica is a feast for the eyes, offering art lovers a visual delight. For the devout, it is a sacred place of prayer, where fine art elevates the spirit. For those exploring the island's heritage, the basilica epitomizes Gozo's rich cultural legacy.
