maltatoday | SUNDAY • 16 FEBRUARY 2025 5 ALMANAC Nature Notebook 958. Hummingbird Hawkmoth HAWKMOTHS are large, streamlined insects with long tapering back-swept wings, like something a fighter plane engineer would de- sign. About six species occur in Malta, smallest of which being the hummingbird hawkmoth. It's an endearing creature to watch – con- veniently by day – 'working' a flowering shrub. Going diligently from flower to flower, it inserts its long hairlike tongue into each bloom to tap that sweet drop of nectar. True to its feathered namesake, it never lands for one second but hovers in mid-air as it probes the tube-shaped flowers that are its specialty. For a long time the larger moth species were seen as harbingers of bad luck, hence the Maltese name ħabbara that still sticks to this harmless beauty. Luckily such medieval attitudes are disappearing.
