Gozo's Mario Grech
among top choices to
succeed Pope Francis
GOZO'S former bishop, Cardinal Mario
Grech, has been named by the New York
Post as one of the top eight possibble suc-
cessors to Pope Francis, the oldest pope
in over a century.
Concern is mounting over the health of
the 88-year-old Pontiff, who has been in
Rome's Gemelli hospital since Friday for
bronchitis treatment. The Pope has been
diagnosed with bilateral pneumonia but
is in a "good mood", the Vatican has said.
With the Pope's deteriorating health,
several prominent cardinals are being
eyed as his successor if the octogenarian
takes a turn for the worst.
And among the front-runners to be-
come the next Pope, according to public
reporting, is Mario Grech who was raised
to the rank of cardinal by Pope Francis in
November 2020. PAGE 3
