TILL FEBRUARY 31 @ 9:00 – 17:00 Mgr Giuseppe Farrugia St George's Square, Victoria This is the year marking the first cen- tenary of the passing of Mgr Giuseppe Farrugia, one of Gozo's most eminent sons and benefactors, whose brilliance left an indelible mark on so many as- pects of the life of the Gozitan commu- nity. He is celebrated for his extraor- dinary intellect, visionary outlook, and unparalleled talents. To mark this important centenary, Il- Ħaġar Museum, in collaboration with a number of institutions, is presenting an exhibition which focuses on three exceptional facets of Mgr Farrugia's genius: his mastery as a sought-after orator, his brilliance as a composer, and his visionary work in design and architecture. TILL 23 FEBRUARY @ 08:00 - 14:30 Dviewpoint – Art Exhibition by Marvic Muscat Banca Giuratale, Pjazza Indipendenza, Victoria The title of the exhibition is Dview- point, as the artist invites everyone to appreciate from his perspective inher- ited landscapes, scenes, traditions and folklore. In the paintings on display one can admire Maltese landscapes, seascapes and moods of weather, hav- ing a timeless message: an uncontami- nated way of life. 21 FEBRUARY – 31 MARCH @ 09:00 - 17:00 50 Years Young – Joseph Vella's Mass in D Op. 20 Il-Ħaġar Gozo Museum This year the evergreen and much- loved Mass in D by Joseph Vella celebrates the 50th anniversary from when it was composed in August 1975, with a first performance at St George's Basilica in July 1976. After Rev. George Frendo's First High Mass at the same Basilica, accompanied by the premiere of the Laudate Pueri Dominum cantata, both Mass in D and this cantata have had an uninterrupt- ed performance history during the St George's Feast Pontifical High Mass. The magnificent Mass in D is known all over the islands, with festa aficiona- dos and professional musicians flock- ing to St George's Basilica on the third Sunday of July to be entranced during its performance in the liturgy. This Mass has also had significant concert performances in Malta as well as at New York's Lincoln Centre, where it was received with tremendous enthusi- asm by patrons. 21 FEBRUARY @ 19:30 Utopias Between Past and Future Il-Ħaġar Gozo Museum Professor Jean-Paul De Lucca, Head of the Department of Philosophy at the University of Malta, will present a talk exploring the themes of Cosmopolitan- ism and the Nature of Genius. Situated between the 400th anniversa- ries of the publication of two seminal early modern utopias – Tommaso Campanella's The City of the Sun (1623) and Francis Bacon's The New Atlantis (1627) – this lecture will ex- plore the two utopian islands, visiting their temples, inhabitants, narrators, and interlocutors (including a Hos- pitaller Knight, no less). Contextual- ising these utopian texts within their authors' broader intellectual frame- works shows that they are not mere abstract constructs. Rather, they represent metaphorical and 'poetic' articulations of worldviews deeply rooted in critical perspectives on their contemporary societies, with an em- phasis on themes such as justice and technology. Ta' Sannat lies in the south of the island of Gozo. The name is probably derived from that of an Arabic-Greek family that moved to Gozo from Sicily. Ta' Sannat is best known for the Ta' Cenc plateau on the edge of the village and its spectacular Ta' Cenc cliffs, the highest cliffs in Gozo. The plateau is typical Maltese garigue rich in flora and fuana. It is also the site of a number of prehistoric remains, including sparse remnants of L-Imramma Temple and three dolmens (made up of, a roughly shaped horizontal limestone slab supported on three sides by blocks of stone standing on end). The plateau overlooks the Hanżira valley, a natural gorge with steep rocky sides separating Ta' Sannat from the village of ix-Xewkija, of which there are excellent views.
