24 | Architecture & Design C oncept sketches deal with what to build, while the later construction and detailed drawings tackle the problem of how to build. Each preliminary sketch may be read as a form of threshold to be crossed for an idea to 'begin its presence' and proceed through transitional phases of development to eventual manifestation. Each concept delineation holds in itself a vision of its goal, just as a seed is in itself the plant it is to become. These preliminary graphics hold within themselves the anticipatory forms of the completed building. The sketches are a systematic dialogue between mind, eye and image assimilating all previous stages of absorption and involving both mnemonic recollections and visions yet to come. The inter-mix of these is what ultimately leads to the final solution. The preparatory sketches at this stage pre-empt the working details of the building; they are a thought process and a dialogue between idea and image; an architect's form of way finding. My concept drawings reveal less of my architectural education overlays since in these renderings it is my artistic side which prevails in a form of inversion of disciplines; hence the coloured renders which manifest the making process and genesis of a project bridging mind, eye, hand to paper.
