White Wagtail A small bundle of white, grey and black feathers darts across your widscreen as you drive. It's the white wagtail (M. zakak abjad), a common winter resident here. They arrive in autumn from northern Europe or Russia, where it gets deathly cold, and spend winter enjoy- ing our balmy climate, foraging in fields, town squares, playgrounds and roadsides. Wagtails are gregarious birds, and love to sleep in large groups in nice big sheltered trees, known as roosts. Our biggest winter wagtail roost is the row of ficus trees in Pjazza Assedju – yes, right in the heart of Valletta. Every evening throughout winter thousands of wagtails congregate there for the night. And every year BirdLife vulunteers pick an evening and go count them as they fly in. Last month we counted 14,780 – that's more than twice the human population of the city!
