Abela said he has presented a plan for a complete restructuring of the existing hospital, to ensure it continues to serve the needs of Gozitans while the new campus is completed. "The plan will expand all the chirurgi- cal, orthopaedic, cardiological and on- cological services," he said. "Our aim is to have all the needs of Gozitan patients are seen to in Gozo to- day and in the future." Abela this week met the committee members of the Gozo Regional Council to discuss the government's plans for the new general hospital. He said that the two-hour meeting with the GRC committee was very im- portant. "I expanded on the government's vi- sion to deliver on its promise of a new health campus which will include a size- able hospital for acute cases," he said. Abela said that the hospital will also cater to the demand for academic ad- vancement and innovative research. He said government wants the new hospital to be a centre for care as well as university-level instruction, in collab- oration with the London Queen Mary University. The Malta Council for Economic and Social Development said in a statement that "concrete and clear" proposals for the Gozo General Hospital were dis- cussed during the meeting. Also present for the meeting was Chief Executive of the Gozo General Hospital, Carmen Ogilvie Galea. The members of the Committee put forward their proposals and suggestions on the future for a modern health sys- tem in Gozo. The health Minister said that the dis- cussion on the plans and vision for the development of the Gozo General Hos- pital "confirms the Government's firm determination to accelerate the health sector in Gozo".
