6 gozotoday | FRIDAY • 14 MARCH 2025 NEWS GOZO in March has a unique kind of charm, revealing the is- land's calm beauty before the summer throng arrive. The is- land's rolling countryside in full bloom, the cool sea air that hasn't been spoilt by the heat, and the chance to explore its historical buildings and natural wonders without the normal rush all contribute to its serene atmosphere. March provides an experience that seems genuine and person- al, whether it's taking leisurely walks along the shore, savouring traditional Gozitan food, or tak- ing in the island's own cultural customs. Early in the spring, Gozo's scen- ery is breathtaking, turning into a verdant haven. The countryside offers the ideal setting for lengthy walks and treks. The walk to Wied il-Għasri, a gorgeous, slen- der inlet that feels like a secret getaway, is a personal favourite of mine. The route to it mean- ders through bucolic countryside before arriving to a remote peb- bled beach with turquoise waves, the ideal spot to stop and take in the splendour. Other routes, like those around the Ta'Ċenċ cliffs or the rocky slopes around Dwe- jra, let tourists experience nature while providing them with stun- ning views of the Mediterranean. March is pleasantly temperate compared to the summer, when the country becomes arid and the heat may be unbearable. Traditions play a major role in Gozo's cultural and religious identity, and March is especially noteworthy since it foreshad- ows Easter. Although Easter oc- curs later, the weeks preceding up to it already highlight the is- land's rich religious legacy, and the churches there eagerly await Holy Week. Villages in the area start getting ready for proces- sions and reenactments of the Passion of Christ; Għajnsielem, Victoria, and Xagħra host some of the most spectacular perfor- mances. In contrast to the more joyous summer festivities, these occasions give a window into the island's strong sense of religion and tradition. Aside from religious festivities, Gozo in March is a refuge for individuals who love peaceful exploring. Landmarks including Victoria's Citadel, the Ġgantija Temples, and Ta' Pinu Sanctuary may be visited more leisurely and without the crowds of visitors during off-peak hours. While the Ġgantija Temples, some of the oldest freestanding structures in the world, have a mystical charm that is even more intense when there aren't many people around, the Citadel, a fortification with centuries of history, provides sweeping views of the entire is- land. In the gentle light of ear- ly spring, the island's coastline treasures, such the remnants of the Azure Window at Dwejra and the secret salt pans in Xwejni, al- so acquire a new splendour. March is a great month for food- ies to savour Gozo's gastronomic delights. The island is renowned for its rustic, fresh flavours, and small eateries and bakeries pro- vide a more laid-back eating ex- perience away from the summer crowds. Try a warm ftira direct- ly from the wood-fired oven at a traditional bakery in Nadur or Victoria. Farmhouse eateries offer substantial delica- cies like rabbit stew and ġbejna, the well-known Gozitan chee- selets. Whether at a family-run restaurant in Xlendi or a beach café in Marsalforn, where the slower pace of life is best appre- ciated with a bottle of local wine in hand, the pleasant weather makes it ideal for dining outside. March in Gozo is also a great time to visit if you want to learn about the island's artisan cus- toms. More meaningful en- counters with regional artisans, whether they be lacemakers, pot- ters, or beekeepers, are possible on the calmer streets. Visiting these workshops offers a look in- to talents that have been passed down through the years, while the island's modest stores and marketplaces provide handcraft- ed gifts that convey the narrative of Gozo's legacy. An excellent opportunity to ob- serve these crafts up close is to visit the Ta' Dbieġi Crafts Village, where craftspeople produce elab- orate pottery, glassware, and lace that showcase Gozo's cultural uniqueness. March gives the opportunity to see Gozo at its most genu- ine, whether you want to stroll through the sleepy alleyways of Victoria's old town, watch the sun set over the cliffs of Xlendi, or listen to the bells of a rural church ringing out across the valley. While summer has its own charm, March is when Gozo shows its true essence. Gozo is a place that varies with the seasons. It is the time of year when Gozo is most serene, its scenery is most colourful, and its customs seem most ingrained. The peaceful allure of early spring is the ideal time of year to visit Gozo if you want to discover a different side of the island, one that is rich in culture, history, and scenic beauty.
