7 gozotoday | FRIDAY • 21 MARCH 2025 NEWS Celebrating 50 years of Il-Girja t'Ghawdex THE 50th edition of Il-Ġirja t'Għaw- dex is taking place on the 27th April 2025. Run Gozo, or il-Ġirja t'Għaw- dex, is the main athletic event in Gozo, attracting participants from around the globe. The event is by far the largest and longest-standing ath- letic event in Gozo, attracting hun- dreds of local and foreign athletes. Registrations for this year's edition are open. The event features a variety of races to suit all levels of fitness and interest, including a half marathon, 10k and 5k races, 10k and 5k walka- thons, a family 2k fun run, and 2k and 900m kids races. Both the half mara- thon and 10K routes are AIMS certi- fied, and Athletics Malta has award- ed the race a 'Gold Label' status. Run Gozo sees its origins in 1977, where a group of youths attending the Xagħra Youth Centre organised the very first edition. Fast forward to 2025, and the Run Gozo event we see today is still run by a dedicated group of volunteers who share a common goal: to deliver a unique il-Ġirja t'Għawdex experience for every sin- gle participating athlete. The team's mission is to promote a healthy life- style and celebrate the rich culture and beauty of Gozo. The half marathon and 10K routes have been meticulously designed to showcase the very best of Gozo. While running, athletes will be im- mersed in the island's rich culture, history, and natural beauty, passing iconic landmarks such as Cittadel- la, tas-Salvatur Hill, Xagħra Square, Xwejni, Qbajjar Salt Pans, Ta' Pinu Shrine, and many more.
