Now scientific names are usually stuffy over- long words but in the case of love-in-a-mist (M. sieq il-brimba), even its scientific name waxes romatic. The flowers – now starting to show – are exquisite beauties that make you wonder whether na- ture sometimes embellishes things for the sheer fun of it. Five silky very pale blue sepals surrounded by a lattice of lace-like leaves and topped with an explosion of filaments and anthers! There's always a scientific reason for all intricate setup naturally, even if we don't always know it. The plant itself is a short and fragile annual, easy to overlook among more robust vegetation. It grows along field edges, steppe, even country lanes. Remember though: blink and you'll miss it!
