An eventful weekend at Il-Hagar Museum
TODAY and tomorrow, Sat-
urday 29 March, Il-Ħaġar Mu-
seum will be presenting a lec-
ture-recital and a clarinet and
guitar recital, respectively.
Tonight, at 7.30pm, Gozitan
pianist Francis Camilleri will
give a lecture-recital titled
Schubert's Piano Sonatas: Po-
etry in Music.
In this lecture-recital, Camill-
eri will explore how Schubert's
music emanates from song.
This is not only a reference to
his large collection of songs but
also to his instrumental music.
Schubert's music sings like
no other but, despite his uni-
versality, his Piano Sonatas
remain neglected. In 1928, the
year of the centenary of Schu-
bert's death, Rachmaninoff
admitted to Cesar Saerchinger
that he had not realised sona-
tas by Schubert existed. Even
today, few of his sonatas are
programmed.
Thus, it seems fitting to
examine certain prejudices
that still prevail against these
works, with particular atten-
tion being given to his late
works, especially the A minor
Sonata, arguably his most inti-
mate.
For logistical reasons, this
event will be held at the Aula
Mgr Giuseppe Farrugia at St
George's Basilica, a few metres
away from Il-Ħaġar Museum.
On Saturday, at 7:30pm, Il-
Ħaġar Museum presents a
clarinet and guitar recital by
Noel Beck and Evan Plumpton,
featuring works by Piazzolla,
Schubert, Satie, Villa-Lobos,
and film music by Ennio Mor-
ricone. This concert is taking
place on the museum's Level 3.
Admission to both events is
free but seat reservations are
recommended by sending an
email to events@heartofgozo.
