Thousands of these fast fliers shoot past our islands in large or sporadic flocks as they wing their way to their summer breeding grounds. They often come down to rest on the water surface in the Gozo Channel but seldom venture inland, as we have no suitable habitat for them here. The Eurasian wigeon (M. silfjun Ewropew) is one of the 10 or so duck species that occur in our waters with any regularlty. It is rarely seen in sizable flocks, indeed sometimes hardly a single bird is seen in spring. This makes it all the more alluring, also because the wigeon is a lovely bird: the male's rich red-brown head contrasts with the largely pale grey body. In flight, however, the wigeon's tell-tale mark is the large white wing patch flashing like a strobe with every wingbeat.
