7 gozotoday | FRIDAY • 4 APRIL 2025 NEWS A seminar dedicated to explor- ing career opportunities within the tourism sector was success- fully held at the Grand Hotel Gozo. Organised by the Industry HR Unit within the Malta Tour- ism Authority, in collaboration with the National School Well- being Services, Ministry of Ed- ucation, this event gathered a dynamic group of Gozitan Ca- reer Advisors, Guidance Coun- sellors, PSCD, and Hospitality Teachers. The participants had the op- portunity to gain valuable in- sights into the operations of various tourism sectors by meeting with a cross-section of tourism operators in Gozo. The attendees were split into groups, with one group visit- ing St. Andrew's Dive Cove in Xlendi to understand the sig- nificant role and career oppor- tunities within the diving sec- tor of the tourism industry. Another group visited BELS English Language School in Kerċem, exploring opportu- nities within the English lan- guage sector and its contribu- tion to tourism in Gozo. The rest met with a Destina- tion Management Company focusing on organising bespoke events, followed by a show round of the Grand Hotel's fa- cilities. Leslie Vella, Deputy CEO of the Malta Tourism Authority, delivered the opening address. Dorianne Gravina, Education Officer for Career Guidance from the National School Well- being Services, emphasised the importance of aligning educa- tional paths with career oppor- tunities in tourism. Joe Muscat, CEO of the Gozo Tourism Association, shared valuable perspectives on Gozo's tourism landscape, followed by an insightful industry update from MaryRose Briffa of the Malta Tourism Observatory. Addressing workforce regen- eration, Ivan Borg Ferrando, Cluster General Manager of the Stivala Group, highlighted the strategies and challenges of attracting and maintaining a skilled workforce in the tour- ism sector. Professor Avellino from the University of Malta delivered a compelling presentation on the various tourism-related oppor- tunities specifically available in Gozo, emphasising the poten- tial for local development. Closing the seminar, Ruth Azzopardi from the Institute of Tourism Studies (ITS) offered an overview of the educational programs, vocational training opportunities, and career path- ways ITS provides, underscor- ing its essential role in support- ing the industry's workforce development.
