maltatoday | SUNDAY • 20 APRIL 2025 5 ALMANAC Nature Notebook Micromobi Toolkit Traffic congestion, air pollution, and stressful commutes have become part of daily life in cities across Europe, but it does not have to be this way. A growing number of people are embracing micromobility, walking, cy- cling, and other small-scale transport solutions to build greener, calmer, and healthier urban environments. At the heart of this movement is the Micromobi project, helping com- munities rethink the way we move in our cities by promoting sustainable, people-friendly alternatives to car-centred transport. To support this shift, the project has launched the Micromobility Toolkit, a practical and easy-to-use resource designed to help individuals, local groups, and city planners take action. Large star of Bethlehem THE large star of Bethlehem (M. ħalib it-tajr kbira) is a relatively tall plant, presently beginning to flower in steppe areas and aban- doned fields. It is unmistakable, with its showy bunch of flowers, each with six milky-white petals cupping a glossy black beady mid- dle part. Growing as it often does in neglected areas that are often not particularly rich in flora, it's always a pleasant surprise to find a stand of this tall elegant plant, and the urge to smell its fragrance is irresistible. So do go ahead and get a whiff, but please don't pick the flowers. Our flora is beset with enough threats as it is, what with trampling, off-roading, herbicides, dumping, trapping sites and the accelerated concreting over of our countryside. How about we leave something for tomorrow's generation. Happy Easter.
