26 | Architecture & Design STONE MEETS ELEGANCE Halmann Vella's Iconic Project in Ibrag A t Halmann Vella, every project is viewed as an opportunity to push the boundaries of natural stone and explore its potential in architectural storytelling. Their recent collaboration on a private investment in Ibrag stands as a proud testament to this ethos; a sculptural achievement that merges innovation in form with the timeless appeal of local stone. The building's most distinctive feature is its commanding scalloped corner block, a soaring 13-metre-high structural element that wraps the property in rhythmic waves of Maltese hardstone. With curved geometry that is organic in nature yet precisely controlled in execution, the façade presents a presence that is both imposing and graceful. It serves not only as a showcase of architectural finesse but also as a bold statement that grounds the property within its urban context while celebrating traditional stonework in a contemporary form. Halmann Vella's role centred on the exterior envelope, particularly the selection, shaping, and placement of the local hardstone. From quarry to façade, each phase required an unwavering commitment to detail and a deep understanding of stone as a living material; one that shifts subtly with light, weather, and perspective. Each scalloped segment was individually sculpted to ensure continuity of curvature and perfect alignment across the structure's full height. The outcome is an uninterrupted, wave-like flow of texture and shadow that transforms elegantly throughout the day. What made this project particularly unique was the way Perit Dawn Fearne's architectural vision challenged the team to reinterpret a monolithic material into something that feels almost fluid. The tension between the building's solid mass and the delicacy of its surfaces required collaboration at the highest level. Halmann Vella's stone specialists worked closely with the architectural team, engineers, and contractors to translate the concept with both creative fidelity and structural integrity. This was far more than a cladding assignment; it was the carving of a landmark. Realising such an intricate, three-dimensional form in large-format hardstone necessitated bespoke fabrication processes and rigorous testing. Each unit of the scalloped façade was crafted with CNC precision to maintain the natural character of the stone. Installation posed its own challenges, particularly given the height and curvature of the corner block. To address this, Halmann Vella developed and implemented a custom anchoring system that ensured both long-term durability and a seamless visual result. While the primary focus was on the external stone envelope, the overall success of the project was made possible through the exceptional synergy among all collaborators. The architectural concept by Perit Fearne, complemented by the refined interior design by Camilleri Paris Mode Projects Studio, created a cohesive design narrative that flows from the façade through to the interior finishings. Structural engineering by Perit James Dingli provided the necessary support for such an ambitious vision, while Ing. Pierre Cassar ensured that building services were seamlessly integrated without compromise. Execution was brought to life by a team of dedicated contractors, including Velpa Projects, Paul Scerri, Gordon Vella, and the in-house expertise of Halmann Vella. This project reflects Halmann Vella's broader philosophy: that stonework is not solely about durability or tradition, but about spatial storytelling. The Ibrag development is more than a building; it is a sculpture one can inhabit, a dialogue between contemporary design and Malta's geological and architectural heritage. It elevates the façade beyond function, into a moment of artistry. As Halmann Vella continues to engage in residential, commercial, and civic projects, this collaboration serves as a powerful reminder of the impact materiality can have on architectural expression. When approached with creativity and respect, stone becomes more than a surface; it becomes an experience, a presence, and a place. Delivering that experience, with dedication and excellence, continues to define Halmann Vella's legacy.
