Their fate gets entwined with the saga of irregular African migrants crossing from Africa to Europe, with tragic consequences. Young Theo is sent on his first trip with his Maltese sea faring family, but things go terribly wrong when the 'Simshar' sinks, leaving the crew stranded in the Mediterranean… Simultaneously, Alex – a medic re- luctantly dispatched onto a Turkish Merchant vessel which has rescued a group of stranded African boat people between Malta and Italy – gets stuck on the boat as the countries wage a bu- reaucratic war over who should take in the migrants… The stories unravel in parallel and culminate tragically when the fishermen are traced down, but by that time there's only one survivor. Simshar is directed and co-written by Rebecca Cremona. 2 gozotoday | FRIDAY • 2 MAY 2025 EVENTS What's happening in Gozo Did you know? Ir-Rabat (Victoria) is the capital city of the island of Gozo. The name Victoria was given to the town in 1887 in honour of the famous British Queen's Golden Jubilee. At the same time, the town was raised to the status of a city becoming officially known as Citta' ir-Rabat (Victoria). Ir- Rabat (Victoria) embraces both the Citadel, the ancient fortified city at the centre of the Island, and the surrounding town old Rabat (meaning suburb in Arabic and Archaic Maltese) and its modern additions. Two main feasts are celebrated in ir-Rabat (Victoria): St. George's during the week preceding the third Sunday of July, and the Feast of the Assumption of Our Lady during the week preceding August 15th.
