8 maltatoday | WEDNESDAY • 7 MAY 2025 NEWS JAMES DEBONO jdebono@mediatoday.com.mt Kidflix: Man handed suspended sentence after admitting to uploading child sex abuse material A man, 26 from Pembroke, was handed a two- year prison sentence, suspended for four years, after he previously plead- ed guilty to buying and publishing child sex abuse material. The purchase and distribution of content was carried out from the larg- est pornographic platform worldwide, known as 'KidFlix'. The man, who cannot be named due to a court order, was arraigned in court on 9 April and subsequently granted bail whilst awaiting sentencing. Upon his arraignment, it was heard how Maltese police received information from German authorities that the man had allegedly bought child sex abuse ma- terial and subsequently published it. The convicted man was one of two Maltese men who were arrested as part of "Operation Stream". The worldwide operation focused on "KidFlix," a major platform used for dis- tributing child sexual abuse material. Be- tween April 2022 and March 2025, the site drew approximately 1.8 million us- ers worldwide and hosted around 72,000 videos. This operation was coordinated by law enforcement agencies from more than 35 countries and has led to the identifi- cation of 1,400 suspects and the arrest of 79 individuals across the globe. Together with the suspended sentence, a supervision order of four years was also issued and a treatment order was given for a period of three years. Additionally, his name will be added onto the sex offenders register. The court was presided over by Magis- trate Nadine Sant Lia. Police inspectors Wayne Buhagiar and Carl Pace prosecuted. Lawyer Veronica-Anne Spiteri ap- peared for the accused. Illum 28 ta' Marzu 2025 Reġistru tal-Qorti tal-Maġistrati (Għawdex), Ġurisdizzjoni Inferjuri Margaret De Battista Assistent Reġistratur, Għar-Reġistratur, Qrati u Tribunali (Għawdex) Old people's home and 203 apartments proposed in Qajjenza A 23-metre-high old people's home and two neighbouring residential blocks rising to 19.9m are being proposed on the privately owned part of Enemalta's former gas plant site. The two residential blocks, rising to seven floors, will house 203 apartments and maisonettes. The proposed old people's home will include 240 beds and will also be built over seven floors, but will be slightly higher than the adja- cent blocks. The development is being proposed on the northern part of the site, which is private- ly owned and entirely located within the development zone. The project, proposed by Paul Attard's Plan Limited, forms part of a larger site that includes land still owned by Enemalta, on which the Plan- ning Authority issued a zoning permit in February. Parallel to the planning appli- cation for a residential home and 203 dwellings, Attard has also filed a zoning application to allow part of his site to be used as a residential home. The zoning permit issued in February limited residential development on the private- ly owned part of the LPG site to a height of 19.9m, with the residential block facing Triq l-Għannejja stepped down to 17.5m. The old people's home, now proposed to be slightly high- er than the adjacent residen- tial blocks, will replace the block of flats that was initial- ly intended to overlook Triq l-Għannejja, part of which was meant to be 2.4m lower than the adjacent blocks. However, old people's homes are allowed two extra floors above the official height limi- tation. The zoning permit issued in February also envisaged the construction of three com- mercial blocks rising to 22m on the Enemalta-owned part of the site. Around 83% of the site owned by Enemalta is earmarked as public open space. So far, Ene- malta has not submitted a full planning application.
