Eurasian Bittern SOME birds are common, others much less so. One of our rarer her- on visitors is the Eurasian bittern (M. kappun), a large but shy and secretive bird. At a glance it may look drab and nondescript but a closer look at its patterned plumage of browns, ochres and yellows will reveal an extremely handsome animal. Apart from its intrinsic beauty, that pattern has an important survival purpose: place the bird in its natural habitat – a reedbed – and it will virtually disap- pear even before it hurries off into the reeds. Like all herons, the Eurasian bittern is a protected species in Malta. Bitterns are migra- tory and, like most of our birds, turn up in spring and autumn. A few have been sighted in recent weeks, down one or two reedy valleys, including the one in the picture.
