Collared Sand Martin THE collared sand martin is a member of that graceful group of ac- complished fliers: the hirundines. While not as plentiful as the barn swallow, sand martins are no rarity in Malta either. They differ from swallows by having shorter tails – though forked nonetheless – and by being sandy brown in colour rather than blue-black. Like other hirundines, the sand martin (M. ħawwiefa tax-xtut) is migratory, so we see it mostly in spring and autumn as it travels to and from Eu- rope and Africa. Unlike the swallow, however, there is no record of sand martins nesting in Malta, main reason probably being that we don't have the breeding habitat they like – sandy river banks where to dig their horizontal nest burrows. So it's likely sand martins will keep using our islands for short B&B stays, and little else.
