maltatoday | SUNDAY • 8 JUNE 2025 Currently, many women are expected to resume work immediately after a miscarriage, forcing many to suppress their physical pain and silently cope with their grief, and often guilt. Implementing miscarriage leave would foster a more compassionate and inclusive workplace where women feel seen, respected, and supported during vulnerable times. This measure will not only recognise the profound impact of pregnancy loss but will also challenge the stigma that surrounds it. 09/04/25 - RABAT, MALTA Leave after pregnancy loss shouldn't be a luxury. It should be a right. A right for couples who are facing the heartbreaking end of a chapter they never imagined would end this way. This kind of leave is a recognition that this is a real loss, which brings deep wounds, some visible, many not, but all profoundly felt. Yazmin Farrugia Helledie Yasmin Hamilton 28/05/25 - SANTA LUĊIJA We can't keep treating pregnancy loss as just "something that happened." No — it's a real loss, and even in loss, there must be dignity. And today… standing here before you… I speak not only as Yasmin, but on behalf of the thousands of women who have been through this — alone, and in silence. Keane Cutajar 23/05/2025 - BIRŻEBBUĠA People who know me think that I have 2 siblings, but people who know me well know that I actually have 3 siblings. I only met my sister once, and that was 28 years ago. As a family, we had to continue with our lives like nothing had happened. This was impossible, especially for my parents who had to go back to work since maternity leave was no longer possible due to the circumstances. We remember Erica everyday, and I'm proud to share our story as we move one step closer to finally changing something that affects so many people — thanks to the ongoing discussion around miscarriage leave. Miscarriage leave is also in the employer's interest — it shows respect and support for their employee's AAA wellbeing, especially their mEntal health. AAAA Let's acknowledge this loss. Let's provide the support. And let's build a society that shows more compassion, so that those who suffer this kind of loss don't have to suffer in silence too. Melanie Kelly 09/04/25 - RABAT, MALTA Jonathan Spiteri 23/05/2025 - BIRŻEBBUĠA Various studies have shown that miscarriage can have a significant negative impact on individual productivity at work, due to the psychological and emotional trauma associated with the loss. Miscarriage leave can assist in providing couples with the necessary support to grieve in peace and foster enhanced wellbeing, which will in turn soften the productivity loss once they return to work. 23/05/2025 - BIRŻEBBUĠA Amy Jo Mifsud
