Maltese Cliff-Orache ITS leaves are a dusty grey-green, its flowers tiny and inconspicuous, and its habitat largely sheer cliff faces. So it's no wonder few people know of this shrub. Yet it's special because, as its name indicates, the Maltese cliff-orache (M. bjanka tal-irdum) is one of our very own: an endemic species, unique to Malta. But it's also special because it was named – Atriplex lanfrancoi – in honour of the man who discovered it: Edwin Lanfranco, who passed away this week. Edwin was teacher, mentor and friend to myriad students, his knowledge encyclopaedic. But his passion were plants, indeed for half a century Edwin was the country's leading botanist. That passion for nature he planted in all of us who knew him and sought his expertise and companionship. May he rest in peace.
