The study examined 700 individuals aged between 11 and 93 years old and was a continuation of previous studies on lone- liness in Malta. When compared to a 2019 study, lone- liness increased by 7.8%, as severe loneli- ness increased from 2% to 4.8% in 2025. Overall 51.1% of the sample group re- ported feeling some form of loneliness, while 48.9% said they were not lonely. Of those who were lonely, 4.8% said they felt severely or very severely lonely. The study found that women and girls are more likely to report being severely lonely. When one looks at age distribution, the study finds that severe loneliness is highest in the 20-34 and 55+ age groups. Meanwhile, the least lonely cohort are those aged between 35 and 54 years old. Respondents were also queried on differ- ent types of loneliness such as emotional loneliness, which is a lack of emotional at- tachment to people. The most emotionally lonely people are adolescents aged between 11 and 20 years old, as only 19% of respondents from this cohort did not report feeling emotionally lonely. This, the study notes, is likely reflective of challenges in forming strong emotional bonds at that age. Meanwhile, those aged between 31 and 50 years old are the least emotionally lonely, but loneliness increases again in respondents over 51 years old. The study also looked at social loneli- ness, which is associated with one's lack of social contact. The most likely individuals who experi- ence social loneliness are those aged be- tween 61 and 70 years old. Very high so- cial loneliness is also most prevalent in people aged older than 51. Elderly people most likely to report being lonely, study finds Man denied bail after being accused of vagrancy, begging in Marsa MATTHEW FARRUGIA mfarrugia@mediatoday.com.mt MATTHEW Falzon, 41, was brought before a magistrate today after he was arrested in Marsa and charged with multi- ple offences related to vagrancy and begging. The court heard how, accord- ing to police, Falzon had been living a life of "idleness and vag- abondage" and was repeatedly seen disturbing the public to solicit money. According to the prosecution, the alleged offences took place on the morning of 9 June, at around 8:45am in Marsa. The court was told that Falzon had no apparent means of income, no employment, and had not made any efforts to seek work or rehabilitation. Defence lawyers requested bail, arguing that Falzon had cooperated with the police and posed no serious threat to public safety. However, the prosecution strongly objected, highlighting the accused's re- peat-offender status and the na- ture of the allegations. The presiding magistrate noted the seriousness and re- petitive nature of the charges, as well as Falzon's status as a recidivist, and rejected the bail request. The court ordered that Falzon remain in custody until the next stage of proceedings. The case was prosecuted by Inspector Gabria Gatt. The ac- cused was represented by law- yer Silvan Pulis.
