Young Creatives in Motion - Piano & Percussion at Teatru Manoel on 18 June 974. Alpine Swift SWIFTS are masters of the air, they're so good at it they don't bother to land. Yup, they stay up there for years on end, feeding, napping, even mating on the wing. People once believed swifts don't have legs: indeed, these birds' scientific name – Apus – literally means no legs, a name they retain even though scientists know better today. Of the three swift species that regularly whizz over Malta every year, the al- pine swift (M. rundun żaqqu bajda) is the largest. It's also the easiest to identify, because of its very visible white underside, almost as if it's wearing a snazzy white vest! Unlike the common swift and the pallid swift, which nest in Malta, alpines haven't so far. So for now we must be content to watch them sail overhead, often with other swifts, as they jet between Europe and Africa.
