maltatoday | SUNDAY • 27 JULY 2025 Public cleansing services at their peak! THIS IS A PAID COLLABORATION THE Cleansing and Maintenance Division (CMD) within the Malta Public Service recently announced a significant €17 million investment in 83 new electric ve- hicles aimed at enhancing the cleaning and maintenance of roads across Malta and Gozo. This major upgrade comes at a critical time, as CMD intensifies its oper- ations during the busy summer months when demand for public cleansing servic- es reaches its peak. The investment includes a fleet of elec- tric-powered sweepers, pressure washers and compact utility vehicles designed to improve operational efficiency while reducing noise and air pollution. With sustainability at the forefront, CMD is committed to delivering a cleaner envi- ronment in a more eco-friendly manner across all localities. The new machinery is already being put to good use, especially in busy areas such as beaches, promenades, village squares and event venues. These advanced tools are enabling CMD teams to carry out their duties more quickly and effectively, keep- ing public spaces clean and safe despite the surge in activity. Beach cleaning is one of CMD's top pri- orities during summer. With both locals and tourists flocking to Malta's coastline, CMD increases the frequency of its clean- up operations. Crews begin early each morning to remove litter and debris from sandy and rocky beaches, ensuring they remain hygienic and welcoming. CMD also provides and maintains waste bins along popular beaches, ensuring they are emptied regularly throughout the day. CMD's role extends well beyond beach maintenance. It provides vital support during Malta's numerous village feasts, offering tailored cleaning services free of charge in collaboration with local coun- cils and feast organisers. These services include street washing, bin provision and the swift removal of post-feast waste to restore public spaces quickly and effi- ciently. In addition, CMD is a key player during national events, concerts and mass gath- erings. With teams working around the clock, CMD manages event-related waste and ensures that streets and public areas remain clean and accessible. This latest investment represents more than just new equipment – it is a testa- ment to CMD's ongoing commitment to public service and environmental sus- tainability. It also acknowledges the ded- ication of CMD staff, who work tirelessly, often in high temperatures and through public holidays, to keep Malta clean. As the summer season unfolds, the Pub- lic Service continues to ensure that Malta remains a clean, safe, and pleasant place for everyone to enjoy.
