A 46-year-old man from At- tard has been sentenced to 13 months in prison, suspended for three years, and fined €23,300 after pleading guilty to his in- volvement in an illegal immigra- tion operation. Both the accused and the com- pany involved were subject to a publication ban imposed by Magistrate Lara Lanfranco. He was arraigned before the court on Monday, where he ad- mitted to helping individuals enter Malta illegally, as well as making false declarations in of- ficial documents. The charges relate to activities between 1 January 2022 and 1 April 2025. Prosecutors accused the man of orchestrating and assisting efforts to bring people into Malta in violation of immi- gration laws, including provid- ing false information to public authorities and harbouring in- dividuals unlawfully residing in Malta. The accused was also charged with conspiring with others to enable the entry or exit of per- sons from Malta unlawfully, with the court noting that more than three individuals were in- volved in the scheme. All parties reached an agree- ment, which, apart from penal- ising the accused, also ensures that investigations may continue into the broader network possi- bly involved. No request was made to val- idate the arrest, and the court proceeded directly to sen- tencing, giving the accused 13 months in prison, suspended for three years, and a fine of €23,300 The prosecution was led by In- spector Karl Roberts on behalf of the Police Commissioner. This was said in a statement in response to a story by Mal- taToday that shed light on the cruel practices of some land- lords who squeeze every cent out of their tenants. Among other findings, union Solidarjetà told this newspa- per that at least half of lease agreements it came across contained illegal clauses, while one tenant explained that it is a known fact in the third-coun- try national (TCN) community that deposits in Malta are nev- er refunded. In its statement, the Cham- ber of SMEs said that the ar- ticle "paints an unfair and un- balanced picture of landlords." The chamber insisted that the relationship between the ma- jority of landlords and tenants is very good. The statement also spoke of challenges faced by landlords, including damages, unpaid rents and utility bills. "A recent survey conducted by the SME Chamber among its landlord members revealed that 50.38% of tenants leave properties with unpaid bills, whether related to utilities or other obligations." The Chamber said it is final- ising a position paper that will include recommendations for a "fairer and more equitable legal framework between land- lords and tenants." "We firmly believe that any form of abuse, whether by landlords or tenants, should be addressed through appropriate and clear effective legal mecha- nisms, with clear consequences in place for any wrongdoing."
